The Bare Minimum of a Good Category Page

Robin Allenson

Launching category pages is hard enough as it is — but launching a good one comes with its own challenges. So what should a good category page include?

1. Title & description

The right title and description goes a long way, especially when it aligns with keywords that are targeted to your customers. A short, useful description with an informative, concise title can be the difference between a click or a bounce.

2. Filters

If you have more than a handful of products on a category page, providing the right filters is vital. Filters allow your customer to find exactly what they’re looking for more easily, and gives them a more personalised user experience. Which filters to show depends on how users intuitively search — rather than only which products you have.

3. Sufficient number of relevant products

A category page with only two products is unnecessary, and a category page with 2 million products likely indicates you need more category pages. Having the right number of products on each category page has a huge impact on your user’s experience on your site.

4. Internal Links

Including links that go out to other related category pages helps your customer explore more of your products. If the category page that they’ve landed is not exactly what they’re looking for, linking out to other variants can elicit their exact intent.

There are many other things a great category page should include — like breadcrumbs, a side navigation and a footer. But at the very bare minimum, the four factors highlighted above need to be addressed.
